What a new AC costs in Fredericksburg.

The same price book our estimator runs on, for a central air conditioner on its own, keeping the furnace you have. A single-stage unit on a small house sits near the bottom; a variable-speed one on a big house, near the top.

Monthly figures: 60mo @ 0% APR on each starting price, the whole price financed, on approved credit. Longer plans lower the payment and cost more in total. The lender sets the final terms. How financing works

The HVAC replacement cost estimator narrows it to your house. Then a tech measures, and you get the installed price in writing before anything is ordered.

With Comfort+ membership at $199 a year, the diagnostic visit is included, and half of each repair bill is banked toward replacing that system, up to $1,500.

What’s different in Fredericksburg

On the Stafford side of Fredericksburg, a resized AC changes the permit math.

Fredericksburg mail on this side of the Rappahannock is Stafford County, not the City, and its houses split by fuel. Gas heats about four in ten owner homes across 22405 and 22406, propane another 7 percent, and those furnaces have a separate condenser outside, the setup this page replaces. About half of 22405’s owner homes heat with electricity instead, usually by heat pump, a different job.

Stafford’s permit FAQ exempts an air conditioner swapped for one of the same type and size in the same spot. Size counts: an AC sized to today’s house can differ from the old one, and then the exemption no longer fits. The Building Division at 1300 Courthouse Road takes the appliance permit on its Residential Change form, signed by the contractor, or by the owner with a notarized affidavit. An HOA’s sign-off doesn’t stand in for it.

22406 is the young ZIP, its typical owner home from 2004, and plenty of builder condensers out Warrenton Road are close to twenty and most likely on R-22, a refrigerant that hasn’t been manufactured since 2020. 22405 runs older, a 1993 median, so many houses there are on a second air conditioner. In Falmouth, typical owner home from 1983, central air was often added to a house laid out around its furnace, so the ducts get measured before a size is picked.

The Fredericksburg weather station by the river logs about 41 days a year at 90 or hotter. Wind is the other threat: the June 2012 derecho measured a 70 mph gust at Route 17 and Poplar Road, and the August 2024 tornado near Glendie snapped trees through subdivisions. On the Falmouth side, Claiborne Run flooded Harrell Road on 14 separate days from 2010 to 2021, so a condenser on low ground there belongs up on a stand.

  • Built since 2000about 5 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 8 in 10 Census
  • Heated withelectricity, about 5 in 10 Census

  • A lot of air conditioners here are the builder’s originals, coming up on twenty years.
  • Bigger single-family houses often run two systems, and each air conditioner is priced on its own.

When it’s time

When a new air conditioner makes sense in Fredericksburg.

The builder’s condenser out Warrenton Road wants a recharge

A unit from 22406’s 2000s building that needs refrigerant has a leak, and on R-22 every refill is reclaimed stock. In a gas or propane house, that’s the point to replace the outdoor unit and its coil and keep the furnace, once the $99 diagnostic rules out a cheap fix.

It still runs on R-22

An air conditioner put in before 2010 most likely holds R-22, which hasn’t been made since 2020. A leak on one of those usually ends the repair road.

It’s still the builder’s AC

A house from the 2000s often cools with the condenser it was built with. Past fifteen years, compressors and fan motors start to go, one after another.

Choosing who installs it

How to pick the best AC replacement company in Fredericksburg.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Did the quote say whether a new size ends the exemption?

Stafford’s exemption covers the same type and size in the same spot. If the load calculation says your house needs a different size than the old unit, a good quote says so and says what the county paperwork then involves, instead of quietly matching the old size to skip it.

  2. Did they size it to your house?

Ask how they picked the size. Copying the old nameplate repeats whatever was guessed when the house was built.

  3. Is the coil inside part of the price?

The outdoor unit and the coil on the furnace are rated as a pair. Ask whether the quote replaces both, and what happens to the line set.

  4. Will they tell you if it’s worth fixing?

A good company puts the repair price next to the replacement range and lets you choose. Already holding somebody’s big number? Take the free second opinion first.

Questions

AC replacement questions from Fredericksburg.

I own a condo in 22406. Does the same exemption apply?

Not necessarily. Stafford County permits condominiums and other multi-family buildings under its commercial rules rather than the house rules, and about 1,670 homes in 22406 sit in buildings of five units or more. Start with the association, which may control where the condenser sits.

We heat with propane in 22406. Can we replace only the AC?

Yes. About one owner in nine in 22406 burns propane, and a propane furnace takes a new coil and condenser the same way a gas one does; the furnace itself isn’t touched. A heat pump in the AC’s spot, with the propane furnace as its backup, is worth pricing beside it at $8,499 to $21,650.

How much does a new AC cost in Fredericksburg?

$5,942 to $14,450 installed for a central air conditioner on its own, keeping the furnace you have; size and efficiency set where yours lands. An AC and furnace together run $8,898 to $23,000. The HVAC replacement cost estimator gives your house its own number.

Should I put in a heat pump instead?

It’s worth pricing. A heat pump cools exactly like an AC and also heats on mild days, so with your gas furnace it becomes dual fuel. A heat pump system runs $8,499 to $21,650 installed, and we’ll price it both ways.
